Filtration

Filtration is used to separate a solution from suspended solids.

Specially made filter paper is available for scientific work.
    An alternative is coffee filters.

The type that is made of circles of  paper is best.
Cone filters tend to leak at the seams.

To put a filter into a funnel:
  • If the paper is larger than the funnel, cut out a circular piece that fits.
  • Fold the paper into quarters.
  • Place the point of the folded filter into the bottom of the funnel.
  • Separate the filter so that there are 3 layers of filter paper on one side and one on the other.
  • Wet the filter with distilled water and press it against the funnel so that it sticks.
  • All of the filter paper should be against the sides of the funnel.
  • Carefully pour your solution through the funnel, making sure that you don't overfill the funnel and cause a spill.
